Aluminium labels

What is an aluminium label?

An aluminium label (sometimes also called ‘aluminium tag’) is a type of label made of aluminium.

In which cases are aluminium labels used?

Aluminium labels are widely used in the engineering and beverage industries. They are riveted, screwed or fixed with 3M transfer adhesive in place. They are also printed with embossed characters or the ID designation of a piece of equipment and play an important role in item identification. Use of the eloxation or anodisation technique is essential if the aluminium labels need to be sufficiently resistant to the effects of acids, fuels, cleaning agents and mechanical friction. These materials usually have extended lead times beyond standard paper and film based materials.

In addition to engineering and beverage, aluminium labels can be found in the military and aerospace industries, in warehousing or in the logistics sector.

What information can be printed on an aluminium label?

Like other more traditional labels, aluminium labels can contain a wide variety of information, including text, logos, barcodes or QR codes. In addition to this, the information contained in an aluminium label can be printed in multiple colors and not just in black.

Apart from printing information on them, aluminium labels can also be engraved. This can be done by using marking techniques such as laser marking.

What advantages do aluminium labels offer?

Compared to other types of labels, aluminium labels offer several advantages, including the following:

  • They are extremely resistant to corrosion, UV, solvents, water and extreme weather conditions. They also offer an excellent abrasion resistance.
  • They are highly customizable. Aluminium labels can contain a wide range of data (e.g. barcodes, variable data) and be manufactured in different sizes, colors and shapes.
  • They are extremely durable and offer a very high resolution.
  • They are ideal for certain industries like aerospace or the military, where the use of aluminium labels is either specified or technically required.

How are aluminium labels manufactured and applied?

The manufacturing process of aluminium labels differs from that of other more traditional labels because of the material used to fabricate them.

The application process, on the other hand, depends on whether the label has a self-adhesive coat. If this is the case, the label can be easily applied by attaching it to the surface. If the label does not have a self-adhesive coat, it will usually have fixing holes so that screws can be used to attach it.
