ID labels

What is an ID label?

An ID label (or identification label) is a label that is used to identify individuals or components in whole or in part of a product.

ID labels can vary from industry to industry and come in a wide variety of face stocks dependent upon the environment they are used in.

For what purpose are ID labels used?

As already noted, ID labels are used to identify individuals or components of a product.

The identification of individuals through ID labels is usually employed for security or organizational purposes. In this sense, an individual holding an ID label might have the right to access facilities or perform tasks that an individual without an ID label cannot access or perform.

Apart from identifying individuals, ID labels are also used to identify product components. The goal of labeling individual components is to be able to identify its source or manufacturer in case the component breaks down and a replacement is needed.

What information does an ID label contain?

Depending on its purpose, an ID label may contain a wide variety of information. For example, if an ID label is used to identify an individual, the label will most likely contain information such as the name of the individual, the organization he works for and maybe some contact information (e.g. email address, telephone number).

On the other hand, ID labels that are used for product traceability normally contain some (if not most or all) of the following data:

  • A serial number.
  • The name and contact details of the manufacturer.
  • The logo of the manufacturer.
  • A barcode or a QR code.

How are ID labels manufactured and applied?

Like other types of labels, ID labels can be easily manufactured with the help of a label printer.

The process of applying ID labels will vary depending on several factors, including the purpose that the labels serve or the amount of labels to be applied. In the case of product components, automated labeling is usually the preferred method.
