Decorative labels

What are decorative labels?

A decorative label is a type of label used for decorative purposes, usually to enhance the appearance of a product.

In which cases are decorative labels used?

Decorative labels are used to visually enhance the appearance of the object they are applied to. They are often used by companies who want to make their products more appealing and distinguish them from the products of their competitors.

As the main purpose of decorative labels is to enhance the appearance of a product, their shape and content significantly differs from those used by the more traditional labels. In this sense, decorative labels usually consist of an image or logo printed in a non-ordinary shape. In addition, they often use bright colours to catch the attention of individuals.

How are decorative labels manufactured?

The process of manufacturing decorative labels does not differ substantially from how other labels are manufactured.

The first step consists in creating the label’s design. Label manufacturers often do this with the help of label software. Label software allows manufacturers to choose among many templates and shapes, but also to upload pre-designed illustrations.

Once the label’s design is ready, the label must be printed. In order to do this, a color label printer is used. If the number of products that need to be labeled is very high, other labeling machines are used to apply the labels, including label dispensers or print-apply labeling systems.

Decorative labels are often printed using polyethylene film. Some manufacturers also use peelable label paper so that buyers can remove the label from the product without damaging the product’s surface.

Decorative labels vs informational labels

Unlike informational labels, decorative labels are mainly used for decorative purposes. Here are some of the differences between these two label types:

  • Decorative labels usually consist of images or logos, while informational labels contain information about the product (e.g. name of the manufacturer, best-before date, a barcode).
  • Decorative labels use eye-catching colours while informational labels usually come in black and white.
  • Decorative labels are a nice add-on that helps manufacturers attract more customers, while informational labels are usually a regulatory requirement.
