Silicone paper (also known as siliconised paper) is a type of paper over which a layer of silicone has been applied.
Silicone paper may have silicone applied in one or both sides of the paper. When the silicone is only applied on one side, the paper is called one-sided silicone paper. When the silicone is applied on both sides, the paper is called two-sided silicone paper.
The thickness of the silicone applied over the paper may also vary depending on the purposes for which the paper will be used.
Silicone paper has special properties that prevent sticky elements like glue or moisture from getting attached to it. As a result, silicone paper is widely used for industry applications, including the following:
In addition to industrial applications, silicone paper is also used for domestic purposes. The most common example is silicone baking mat, a type of silicone paper used for baking.
A release liner is a type of paper that allows the release of a sticky element or prevents it from permanently getting attached to the liner.
Release liners consist of several layers. The top layer is usually made of silicone due to silicone’s anti-stick properties. Release liners are often used in the manufacturing of self-adhesive labels or adhesive bandages.
As already mentioned, silicone paper is often used in the manufacturing of labels. More specifically, silicone paper is used as a release liner for self-adhesive labels. In this sense, self-adhesive labels are attached to the release liner and can later be peeled off and applied over a surface.
It is worth noting that silicone is also used to manufacture specific types of labels. Examples include shoe labels, bag labels or footwear labels.
