What is the timeline for the transition?

2022 - 2027

Preparation and transition phase

  • This phase is intended for gradual introduction: manufacturers, retailers and service providers are testing applications, hardware and software and adapting their processes to the new technology.
  • In 2022, GS1 officially approved the use of 2D codes at the point of sale (POS). Since then, 2D codes (GS1 DataMatrix or QR code with GS1 Digital Link) can be used on products in addition to the classic EAN code.
  • Dual marking as a standard: during this period, both the classic EAN/UPC and the new 2D code will appear on packaging. This ensures backward compatibility with existing POS systems.

End of 2027

Technological milestone

  • By the end of 2027, all commercially available POS scanners worldwide should be technically capable of reading 2D codes – at least the GTIN must be able to be read and processed.
  • This requires the widespread use of camera-based scanners and the updating of POS software for data interpretation.

Starting 2028

Free choice of code type

From January 2028, the decision will be up to the brand owner:

  • Retaining classic EAN/UPC code or
  • Switch completely to a 2D code as the sole code type on the product
