Security labels: How they work

Security labels make unauthorized tampering with packaging immediately and reliably visible. Furthermore, they guarantee product authenticity and thus make counterfeit products immediately recognizable and identifiable.

Security labels have special features that can guarantee product authenticity and provide first-opening protection. Often, these security features are integrated or printed features in the label that protect both manufacturers and consumers from product piracy. These labels can be found, for example, on pharmaceuticals, hygiene products, safety-relevant components or high-quality branded products.

VOID labels: Remaining lettering

Among other things, security labels serve as initial opening protection. Here, void labels are the right type of security label. The special feature of these labels is a layer behind the face material. The face material is a special film that has a special adhesive on the back that contains a security feature – a special writing is hidden as a security feature. If you glue this label and peel it off again, writing remains on the backing.

Most often, this is the step “VOID”, which remains on the substrate after opening, indicating that the product or packaging has already been opened.

Labels leave own writing: Individual security labels

The standard void labels always leave the writing “VOID” after detaching from the product. Other lettering is possible, such as your own company name or special characters and drawings. There are almost no limits to creativity.

Security labels (safe – safer – safest): Multiple components possible

Every year, counterfeit products worth many billions of euros are put into circulation.

For consumers, a counterfeit product can be extremely annoying, in the worst case life-threatening. For producers, counterfeit products mean economic losses and damage to their image, among other things.

The product protection by means of a security label is a safe way to ward off product pirates, because the imitation of such a special label is very costly. Depending on the integrated security features, it may even be impossible to copy a security label.

Security labels can be equipped with several protective features:

  • Invisible features
  • Markings difficult to imitate
  • Visible material destruction when opened
  • Individual hologram foils
  • Individual imprint by matching with databases
  • And much more
