GS1-128 Barcode

The GS1 128 barcode (formerly EAN 128) is based on the Code 128 and is the logistics standard for tracking and tracing. Unlike Code 128, the GS1 128 barcode can encrypt various information in one code. For example, in addition to the article number, this could also be the best-before date or batch number.

Unlike the normal Code 128, the GS1 128 code has an additional control character FNC1 next to the start character. This FNC1 character signals that the code is structured according to the GS1 standard. By using two- to four-digit data designators in the code, it is possible to store several values in the GS1 128.

The data identifier is always at the beginning of a piece of information and indicates which data follows in which format. Each piece of information – item number, batch number, best-before date, etc. – is assigned a data identifier. There are over 100 such data identifiers. For example, the data identifier for the batch number is 10, and for the best-before date it is 15.

GS1-128 code on the GS1 transport label

The GS1-128 standard is most commonly used on the GS1 transport label. In addition to the sender, article number and any other information, the label also shows the number of the shipping unit (NVE). This enables the goods to be traced along the supply chain.
