Overprinting

Learn what overprinting is and how Weber Marking Systems can help you with it!

What is Overprinting?

Overprinting is the process of printing new information on an already printed surface.

In the world of labeling, overprinting means printing information on a pre-printed label.

How does Overprinting work?

Overprinting is as simple as printing something (e.g., text, colours, images) over a surface which was already printed.

In the labeling industry, overprinting usually translates into printing variable information on the same label template. This printing technique is particularly efficient in mass production, where large qualities of products are manufactured and labeled in a short amount of time. With overprinting, a manufacturer can pre-print a label template and use it for all their products. When the products are labeled, the label template is applied and, at the same time, information specific to the product is printed over the template.

Overprinting is particularly common when the same product is made available in different markets. Think of cereal packaging: with overprinting, a unique package design can be used for all markets, while the market-specific information is printed afterwards.

How is information printed over a pre-printed label?

There are different techniques that can be used to overprint information on a pre-printed label. However, the most common are:

  • Laser marking: in this case, a laser beam adds the information to the pre-printed label.

  • Inkjet printing: here, small ink droplets are applied from a distance.

  • Thermal transfer printing: in this case, a heated ribbon is used to melt ink onto the pre-printed label.

What are the advantages of Overprinting?

The biggest advantages of overprinting are reduced costs and flexibility.

With overprinting, it is no longer necessary to create a specific label for each product type. A unique label template can be used and the information specific to the product or product type can be added at a later date.

Overprinting also offers a lot of flexibility. Manufacturers can choose which information is going to be overprinted without changing the label background. Moreover, the variable information printed on the pre-printed labels can be adjusted in real time, making the labeling process extremely fast.
