A ribbon sensor is a special type of sensor hosted in a thermal transfer printer. Its main purpose is to monitor the thermal ink ribbon located inside the printer.

Ribbon sensors act as a preventive mechanism: by monitoring the movement and supply level of the ink ribbon, they guarantee that the thermal transfer printer functions in an appropriate manner and does not damage the printhead or print unreadable labels.

Ribbon sensors can monitor and optimize several aspects of thermal transfer printing, including the following:

• Ink consumption levels. Ribbon sensors detect if the ribbon roll is empty or alert the user that the roll is about to finish. Ribbon sensors can also pause the thermal transfer printing once the roll is empty or before that happens.

• Ribbon integrity. Ribbon sensors can detect if a ribbon breaks or slips off the roller and pause the printer to prevent any hypothetical damages.

• Ink waste. Ribbon sensors help pause the ribbon movement in blank spaces to reduce ink waste and production costs.
