Top and Bottom Labeling

Learn what top and bottom labeling is, its purpose and how Weber Marking Systems can help you implement it!

What is top and bottom labeling?

Top and bottom labeling is a special labeling process that enables the simultaneous labeling of the top and bottom sides of an item or package.

Top and bottom labeling is widely used in all sorts of industries, including food or electronics.

How does top and bottom labeling work?

Because of the specificities surrounding the process, top and bottom labeling can only be performed by labeling machines specifically configured to handle it.

Labeling systems capable of top and bottom labeling usually work in one of the following ways:

  • They are equipped with two independent label applicators, each responsible for applying the top or bottom label.

  • They are equipped with a split conveyor. The conveyor is conformed by two horizontal belts separated by a gap and moving in the same direction. A labeling head is then placed underneath the gap. This way, when the product passes over the gap, the labeling head applies the label to the bottom side of the item.

  • They are built with side-grip (also called hugger) belts. Unlike the previous description, here the labeling system is equipped with two vertical belts. These belts grab the item and move it over an open space, which allows the labeling heads to apply labels on the top and bottom sides.

What are the advantages of top and bottom labeling?

Top and bottom labels offers multiple advantages, including:

  • Extreme efficiency, as the items intended to be labeled do not have to circulate over the same conveyor belt twice.
  • Speed, because both labels (top and bottom) can be applied at the same time.

  • Precision. As both labels are applied by the same machine at the same time, this guarantees their alignment.

  • Space savings. Since the top and bottom labeling can be done by just one machine, the space required for a second machine is saved.
