The Electronic Product Code (EPC) is a globally non-overlapping identification code that can be used to uniquely identify objects. It always consists of the GS1 basic number, occasionally an object type and always a serial number.
The EPC has been established as a global standard in numerous industries. It can be found on objects, products, logistic units, load carriers, warehouses or documents. It ensures fast and transparent processes (e.g. in goods receipt, order picking, production control, warehouse management or inventory).
The data of the EPC is read out without visual contact. The long, unique number contains information about the manufacturer, lot number, or product type. RFID readers record this information in order to use it to monitor supply chains or inventories and to track processes.
The EPC offers many advantages, including:
The GTIN is the 13-digit item number below the EPC. With it, every article, every product or every product variant can be identified worldwide without overlapping.
The GTIN is often also called the article number and acts as an access key to product information stored in databases, such as designation, weight, container size or product group. It is also the basis for the barcode. The barcode makes the GTIN machine-readable, which means it can be automatically read out by a scanner, for example at the retail checkout or when goods are accepted in the warehouse.
The label printers and labeling solutions of Weber Marking Systems can print the EPC on a wide range of surfaces. If you would like to talk to one of our experts and work out an investment-safe solution that meets your requirements and budget, do not hesitate and contact us!
