What is the GS1 DataMatrix?

The GS1 DataMatrix is a two-dimensional code that was specially developed for use in the logistics and industrial sectors.

In contrast to the classic barcode, the GS1 DataMatrix is a real miracle of space. It offers significantly more information in the smallest area. For pure product identification, the GS1 DataMatrix requires less than 5 x 5 mm space. Serial numbers, batch numbers or expiry dates can also be integrated. This expands the possible applications, e.g. in relation to warehousing, protection against counterfeiting and product traceability. The GS1 DataMatrix is GS1 compliant and can be used throughout the supply chain.

In which industries is the GS1 DataMatrix used?

The GS1 DataMatrix offers several advantages compared to the classic barcode. It accommodates much more information in the smallest area. This enables greater transparency along the supply chain, including packaging and the loading, unloading and reloading of goods, packages or pallets.

The GS1 DataMatrix is often used in the healthcare sector. Its track and trace feature ranges from the raw material to the administration of the drug to the patient. Further areas of application include technical industries, railway systems and supplier industry for car construction and aviation.

How can the GS1 DataMatrix be printed?

In addition to classic labels, the GS1 DataMatrix has an advantage over one-dimensional codes: it can be applied directly and permanently to products, components or individual parts. The information can be encoded both vertically and horizontally and read out in any position (360°).

GS1 DataMatrix and anti-counterfeiting

The GS1 DataMatrix is difficult to spoof due to its design. The structure makes it ideal for protecting original parts. The code consists of:

  • Encrypted data starting with FNC1.
  • A light zone on all four sides (1 X-module each).
  • An "L" shaped search pattern with alternating dark and light elements on the other sides.

GS1 DataMatrix and product traceability

GS1 DataMatrix also offers improved traceability. Each code contains a unique identification number that allows the product to be traced from production to sale. This allows companies to quickly respond to issues and perform recalls when a defective product is identified.

The advantages of being GS1 compliant

GS1 DataMatrix is also GS1 compliant and conforms to GS1 Global Standards. These standards ensure that all companies speak the same language and use consistent methods for product identification and traceability. This increases efficiency and accuracy in the supply chain.

GS1 DataMatrix vs Data Matrix Codes

The Data Matrix Code (DMC) is another example of a 2D code that is often confused with GS1 DataMatrix. However, DMC is not GS1 compliant and is therefore used for other applications, such as in the automotive industry for identifying car parts.

GS1 DataMatrix vs Classic barcodes

The classic barcode consists of a series of lines and spaces that identify a product. In contrast, the GS1DataMatrix consists of small squares that form a code. In addition, the GS1DataMatrix can fit more information in a smaller space and offers enhanced anti-counterfeiting protection and product traceability.
