Tyre label

What is a tyre label?

A tyre label is a special type of label used to provide information about vehicle tyres.

What is the EU tyre label?

The EU tyre label is a label that must be applied to certain tyres sold within the EU. This label is regulated by Regulation (EU) 2020/740 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 2020 on the labeling of tyres with respect to fuel efficiency and other parameters.

The contents and format of the EU tyre label are described in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2020/740. In particular, the EU tyre label must contain the following information:

  • A QR code.
  • The trademark or tradename of the tyre supplier.
  • A tyre type identifier.
  • The tyre size designation, speed category symbol and load-capacity index.
  • The tyre class (e.g. C1, C2, C3).
  • A fuel efficiency pictogram, which indicates the fuel consumption level of the tyre. The pictogram classifies fuel efficiency on a scale from A to E, A being the best fuel economy class and E the worst.
  • A wet grip pictogram, which indicates the tyre’s ability to stick to the road under wet conditions. As with the previous pictogram, wet grip is classified on a scale from A to E, A meaning high wet grip and E meaning low.
  • An external rolling noise pictogram, which indicates how much exterior noise the tyre produces, accompanied by the serial number 2020/740. This pictogram uses a scale from A to C to indicate the tyre’s noise level, A being the quietest and C the noisiest.
  • A snow grip pictogram, which must only be included if the tyre satisfies minimum snow grip index values.
  • An ice grip pictogram, which must only be included if the tyre satisfies minimum ice grip index values.

Tyre suppliers are obliged to label their tyres with the information listed above as of May 2021.

How are tyre labels manufactured?

The process of manufacturing tyre labels is not so different from how other labels are created. There are, however, two particularities:

  • The label must comply with the format and contain the information listed in the corresponding regulation.
  • The label must be able to stick to the tyre’s surface, which means the label’s adhesive must be such that it prevents the label from being easily peeled away.
